Podcast: I talk w/ local newsie Jim Flink now VP of News 4 Newsy.com

I had a quick moment to sit down and talk with soon to be former ch9 anchorman Jim Flink about his new gig as VP of News Operations for Newsy.com Jim talks about what Newsy does and how they hope to change the way we get our visual news on the Internet.

On a personal note, I’ve worked with Jim for the past 14 yrs. I’m gonna miss his great media mind that challenged me on numerous occasions to think different and see the bigger picture. So all the best to my colleague and friend on his new gig.

Today on Twitter @artofbeingblunt asked me to recommend an HD Camcorder with a budget of less than $800 bucks. Lucky for her this is not a challenge in todays market place. The consumer market is over run with HD camcorders in this price range. I will be the first person to tell  you DO NOT BUY A "VIDEO TAPE" CAMCORDER!!! There is no need to buy an HD consumer camcorder that relies on mini dv tapes to record. Save yourself the time and buy something that records onto SD media cards or one with a built in hard drive, oh and stay away from DVD camcorders trust me I'm a professional.

The advantage of recording to SD media cards is that your videos are created as video files and  when you are done recording you can just take your sd cards pop them into a card reader dump them to folder and your video is available to use for editing. With the HD camcorders that record onto tape, if you recorded an hour of footage it will take you an hour to get it into your computer. My Favorite in this marketplace is the Canon Vixia HF20 Flash Memory Camcorder. Watch the video for all the details on this great little camera.

Another option that has been making alot of noise in the consumer HD marketplace are what i call point and shoot video cameras. Most folks are familiar with these cameras made popular by the Flip Camera  a few years back. Well they have come along way and my favorite in that marketplace is from Kodak. The Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera come with 1080p HD video, several video shooting options and the ability to take 5megapixel pictures, this camera is definitely for the person who wants HD video plus photos all in a small carry in your pocket form factor. Check out the video for all the details on this little HD camera that has put Kodak front and center in this marketplace.

Now for the bad news. Yes there is always something that these companies fail to mention. Lucky for you i'm about to save you lots and lots of headaches and frustration. :) What these companies don't often mention, is that the video card and processor in your desktop or laptop computer needs to be able to handle the huge data rate that HD video carries. Simply, if you play an HD video recorded with either one of these cameras the video is going to play back choppy if your computer can't handle the data rate. Simply take the make and model of your desktop or laptop with you when you go to buy one of these cameras and make them verify that your system is up to date enough to handle the HD Video.

Or you could just buy yourself a new iMac or Macbook and you'll be all set. :)

Canon VIXIA HF20 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder. $699.00-799.00

KODAK Zi8 Pocket Video Camera $179.00-199.00
