Flener looks forward to contributing to legacy station and being close to family.
Kansas City, MO. (February 20, 2013) – KMBC 9 News is proud to announce the addition of Matt Flener to the morning news anchor team. Flener, a University of Missouri graduate with strong Kansas City ties, will return to a place he considers home. Matt will co-anchor the morning news on sister station KCWE from 7:00-9:00 a.m. starting April 1.
“It’s an honor to join such a well-respected station,” said Flener. “KMBC has a rich history of strong journalism and I’m excited to break stories that continue that tradition. I’m happy to move back to the Midwest to raise my kids. They have a great chance to learn strong family values in the Kansas City area and be close to their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.”
Most recently, Matt was News Anchor, Reporter and Host for KUSA 9 News in Denver, Colorado. In addition to anchoring weekend newscasts, he hosted a monthly political talk show. Matt is committed to social media engagement and enjoys connecting with viewers in new and innovative ways. Prior to KUSA, Matt served as Anchor/Reporter at KXAN in Austin and KOMU in Columbia, MO. Flener is the recipient of prestigious journalism honors including two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and the Emmy.
“Matt brings a passionate commitment to serve our community,” said Sherrie Brown, KMBC 9 News Director. “He’s very approachable, which makes it easy for people to connect with him. Matt’s storytelling is compelling and his experience is a great asset to our team.”
Matt Flener holds a Masters of Arts Degree in Media Management from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. During his tenure in Denver, Matt served as an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Denver Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies.
